Neonatal Critical Care involves delivering compassionate care in managing a very critically ill infant. Hence, the name is regarded as the most appropriate corresponding to management of critically ill. The need for neonatal critical care arises when a baby is premature, contracts neonatal infections, trauma during delivery causing damage to their central nervous system. Such babies are later on in life referred to as having Cerebral Palsy. This condition is defined as the damage to the brain caused in a new born prior to birth, at birth or in the postnatal period. Such infants require critical care management in the intensive care unit run by the neonatologist and staff nurses.
NICU is a specialized treatment department set up for critically ill newborns or infants. Every maternity hospital has a NICU to take care of the babies immediately after birth in case of any complications. The term neonates mean a newborn baby. The tag of neonate is retained till the baby attains 28 days of age. The case involving neonates are very important as they can neither speak nor show their problems.
